El Salvador (the Republic of the Savior) is known for being the smallest and most densely populated country in Central America. San Salvador was announced as the capital. It is considered an important cultural and commercial center for all of Central America. It borders Guatemala, Honduras, the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Fonseca. It is the only country in this region that is not on the Caribbean Sea. El Salvador has a strong presence of mountains and is also known as the land of volcanoes. Therefore, most of it lies on a fertile volcanic plateau about 2,000 feet (607 m) high. 5,744,113 people composed mainly of Métis. Mestizo is a term traditionally used in Spain and Spanish-speaking Latin America to refer to a person of European and Native American descent. The others include 12% white and 1% Aboriginal. The colon was the official currency of El Salvador from 1892 until 2001, when it adopted the US dollar. Independence• El Salvador gained its independence on September 15. 1821 of Spain and was recognized by Spain as a separate nation in 1865. While recognition of the Great Republic of Central America was achieved in November 13, 1898.
