If you were to ask many video game enthusiasts about their favorite female heroines, the answers you would get would be very varied - some would say Lara Croft from the series Tomb Raider, others say Alyx from the Half-Life series, few say Jade from Beyond Good & Evil, a handful vouch for Chell from Portal, and many old school folks might just say Ms. Pac-Man. However, there is another video game heroine who managed to touch the hearts of both male and female gamers, proving that she was just as awesome as any famous male hero. However, for gamers sitting in front of their TVs and exploring the desolate planet of Zebes via their Nintendo Entertainment in 1986, it was widely assumed that the famous bounty hunter was male. At the end of the adventure, the big revelation was made: by removing her helmet to signify a job well done, Samus Aran, protagonist of the Metroid series, was indeed a woman. For the purposes of this article, we will analyze Samus' heroism through three distinct analytical lenses: the Hero's Journey (by Joseph Campbell), Carl Jung's archetypes, and feminist analysis. Of course, to learn more about our heroine, we must first find out what motivates her, what motivates her, and her goal as a bounty hunter. Metroid's story spans 11 games and various Japanese manga series, all of which follow Samus throughout her never-ending quest. Its role is to rid the world of Metroids, life forms used as biological weapons by the Space Pirates, the main enemy of the Galactic Federation, of which Samus is employed as a formidable bounty hunter.
