Essay / Limitation Effect on People's Lives - 714
Ama Ata Aidoo's short story, Certain Winds From The South, begins with the narrator's explanation of the condition of the main character, M'ma Asana. M'ma Asana explained by the narrator as a woman who does not have the ability to detect other problems happening in her life "...thinking that her eyes were misting up was due to the cold in the air. " Knowing that something is wrong with her eyes, M'ma Asana did not choose the path of further discovery of her problem, rather she let the problem related to her own body be forgotten. The mist itself reflects something that covers M'ma Asana's point of view and limits M'ma Asana to being unable to see her problems and her world clearly. As she realizes that she is unable to do anything due to this limitation, she continues to eat kola nuts, which can reduce hunger and fatigue and be an antidepressant. It's ironic how she continues to eat kola nuts as if she already knows how her life and destiny will never be changed. M'ma Asana knows that the kraal limits all the villagers of the south, the unknown world which takes her son-in-law and her husband is gone and will not return for more than 20 years. Without wanting to cross the kraal, the border between north and south, M'ma Asana was left alone to raise her daughter. “But there is only one death and one pain.” The villagers seem to be limited from having children by the fear of death and the pain of pregnancy. The boundary clearly marks a boundary between north and south. Boundary is a real or imaginary line that marks the limits or edges of something and separates it from other things or places; a dividing line (Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary). With or without people's awareness, borders will always appear everywhere. An example...... middle of paper......traveling the kraal to see how the south is, the other world, where the wind continues to blow from there. Similarly, Charlene believes that her status as a mistree limits her from having another relationship with another man. She did not choose her path to have a relationship with Mark, Hilda's cousin from Brooklyn, where he is a banker. Charlene's habit, as recounted by the narrator, of wearing the Phi beta Kappa key around her neck on a cheap gold chain contrasts with her reality, which is also recounted by the narrator, she is secretary of Karma-Kola . In fact, all of his minds, his words, and even his to-do list were all controlled by the narrator. She is trapped by limitation. She never chose the way to be different, to be more than what the narrator told her. The cause is the border. People are often full of themselves, due to their minds never growing..
