Essay / Euthanasia in the Netherlands: death is not a doctor's business...
“No problem is solved by destroying the thing involved” (Fenigsen). Euthanasia could be defined as the destruction of the person with the problem in general terms. By euthanizing the person with the disease, nothing substantial is accomplished. By legalizing euthanasia, doctors are taking advantage of the power given to them to heal people. Additionally, patients feel pressured to make decisions they don't necessarily want to make. The medical field focuses on euthanasia as an option to actually treat patients, so patients do not feel safe when admitted to hospitals. These are major problems caused by the use of euthanasia. Although the legalization of euthanasia in the Netherlands was intended to alleviate the suffering of patients, the abuse of this decision has led to inhumane and immoral decision-making in the healthcare community. One of the major problems with legalizing euthanasia is that doctors take advantage of their power. These doctors perform euthanasia for many reasons, simply to make their lives easier. “When these doctors are brought to justice for these actions, they are rarely found guilty. Their excuse is that they are acting out of greater necessity for the hospital system, which is an excuse accepted by the courts” (Fenigsen). Involuntary euthanasia is another common problem. According to Diane Gianelli of American Medical News, 2,000 doctors say they administer painkillers to kill their patients. This shows that these doctors are either incredibly incapable of providing the appropriate dosage of painkillers, or they are deliberately ending their patients' lives without their consent. Euthanasia also serves as an excuse for doctors' errors. “...... middle of paper ......xt. Internet. March 13, 2014. “Context of euthanasia in the Netherlands. » Patients' Rights Council.
