Essay / Movie Analysis: American Beauty directed by Sam Mendes
Caroline and Lester are too scared and worried about what might happen or what people might think. They never really consider divorce because they both feel it's not worth it and they're past the point of caring. They see divorce as a very delicate thing and that it would require a lot of work and effort, both mentally and physically. Statistics on the divorce rate in New Zealand show that around a third of couples married in 1970 had divorced before their wedding anniversary (age 35). This suggests that two-thirds of marriages end with the death of one partner. This is exactly what happened to Lester in the movie. In other places in the world, getting out of a marriage is not easy. For example, recent statistics indicate that the average divorce rate for arranged marriages is 4.2%. This is where couples don't have any say in who they're going to be with. In a country like India, recent statistics show an overall divorce rate of 1.2%. It is frowned upon to leave a marriage in Indian society. The freedom and joy of having a say in who you marry - found in New Zealand - is something that benefits us.
