Essay / The relationship between game narrative and personality...
A study was carried out by Kuang (2011) to analyze the relationship between game narrative, personality and immersion. He used the questionnaire method to analyze the relationship. He gathered 630 respondents by sending personal emails to distribute the survey. The emails contained the link to the website, where respondents could access the questionnaire. The survey had three sections measuring personality, past gaming experience, and recent gaming experience. The NEO Five Factory Inventory was used to measure the personality of the respondents. In this questionnaire, the participant's openness, conscientiousness, extroversion, agreeableness and neuroticism would be measured. Questions regarding past gaming experience would mainly focus on their favorite type of games and other gaming-related hobbies. For questions about recent gaming experience, some asked about games they had recently played and their level of immersion. The immersion questions are taken from the Immersive Experience Questionnaire. The five factors that constitute immersion were also taken into account in the study. The five factors are cognitive involvement, dissociation from the real world, emotional involvement, difficulty and control. Cognitive involvement corresponds to the player's mental engagement in the game. Dissociation from the real world corresponds to the degree of disengagement the person has when engaged in the immersive task. Emotional involvement corresponds to the person's emotional attachment to the task. Difficulty is the extent to which the task seems difficult to the person and control is the degree of influence the person believes they have over the outcome of the task. The data were analyzed by factor analysis and correlation. The study showed that the personality spent...... middle of paper ...... a 15-minute break before being reoriented with the same instructions. They were asked to play for 45 minutes the game that they had not played during the last session and they had to answer the same questionnaires but with the second game in mind. They were then asked about their experience. A paired t test was used to analyze the collected data and the results showed that there was no significant relationship between openness and immersion. After reconsidering their experiment, they discovered that the two games they used may have been indistinguishable in terms of storytelling, which may have led to conflicting results. Both studies showed that immersion can be affected by the player's personality and affect the overall gaming experience. The researcher suggested that more studies be done to analyze the relationship between personality and immersion..
