  • Essay / Ethnography of Walmart - 892

The purpose of my ethnographic study is to study the inhabitants of Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart is a place that varies from city to city, but always attracts the same people. Everyone knows the weird people who wear ridiculous things to go on their regular errands. That's why I chose to do my mini ethnography one day while doing some insider shopping at the local Wal-Mart in Auburn, Alabama. Wal-Mart is a large shopping center that attracts many types of people, while creating an environment in itself. I woke up one morning needing to run some errands because I ran out of eggs to make breakfast. I also realized I needed ink cartridges, glue for a project, and a video game I wanted; materials that normal grocery stores would not sell. Wal-Mart is the typical supermarket where you can buy almost everything. So I figured there was a better place to get all of these items at a good price than going to Wal-Mart. Before I went to Wal-Mart, I made a list of some features I should look for. I started to wonder about some common things at Wal-Mart, like what will the average age range be? How many students? What range of races will there be? All these questions crossed my mind before the ethnography. I walked in front of the store and saw a crowd of people looking for a good grocery cart. The one that wouldn't wobble every second you pushed it. I looked at many faces as they began or ended their shopping experience. The people walking around looking for a cart seemed unsure or unhappy to be there in the first place. While the people leaving seemed happy and eager to return home. I took this as a clear sign that it wasn't the nicest place to... middle of paper ..., There were also many aspects that all of these Wal-Mart shoppers shared. Almost everyone dreaded the loud, obnoxious shopping carts when they entered the store. And most importantly, everyone hated the fact that Wal-Mart only opened five of its twenty checkouts. This caused long lines to build up as people waited to purchase their items. People in a hurry did not take this lightly. While shoppers who weren't in a rush took that time to read the magazines and check out the candy options. This mini-ethnography taught me to look at people in a completely different way. It opened my mind to a whole new view of how people interact and go about their daily lives. I've found that people at Wal-Mart can vary greatly, even if everyone is there for the same reason. Wal-Mart has become a place that supports many people, regardless of race, size or gender..
