Essay / Oil in the Delaware River - 1334
In this project, we explored the oil industry along the Delaware River and examined its social, economic, and environmental implications in local, regional, and global contexts. It is clear that the oil industry along the Delaware River has grown the local, regional and, in some sense, global economy. But it has also generated social and environmental problems, positive or negative, directly or indirectly. We try to look at the oil industry along the Delaware River in a dialectical way, to give the pros and cons, because it's really difficult to draw a definitive conclusion. We chose to focus on the Trainer refinery, located along the Delaware River. . Trainer Refinery is owned by Monroe Energy, which is a subsidiary of Delta Airlines. It supplies eighty percent of Delta Airlines' jet fuel needs in the United States. Since Delta Airlines is a transnational corporation, we considered Trainer Refinery a good example of studying the oil refinery along the Delaware River and its relationship to globalization. We discovered that the history of the oil industry along the Delaware River dates back to 1892. Since then, port facilities, public transportation and other forms of infrastructure have benefited from this industry and experienced significant development . However, more recently, due to rising costs of importing and refining crude oil, a few refineries along the Delaware River are on the verge of closing. According to the report, the cessation of operations at these facilities resulted in a direct loss of 1,800 jobs and an indirect loss of 15,000 jobs. In this situation, however, Delta Airlines spent $180 million to purchase Trainer Refinery, in an effort to reduce the cost of jet fuel. This purchase...... middle of paper ...... ng with the chemists, we learned that they had found oil in sediments collected from the Delaware River, which makes sense of our research . Their success gave us great motivation. Second, we also learned from the chemists and their professor that the Trainer refinery oil spill was actually relatively insignificant. Their specialist knowledge and advice enabled appropriate judgments to be made and a focus on other aspects of the project, which might be more important. I think such interdisciplinary collaboration is useful, as the research and analysis process is more efficient and the results are more reliable. Overall, it's really a good experience for me to participate in this interdisciplinary project. I love the implications of this because it is a meaningful project. He cares not only about the Delaware River, but about all of us..
