  • Essay / Sex in advertising: manipulation has gone too far - 562

Kraft published several advertisements in early April to launch its spicy salad dressing (Nudd). One in particular shows a very attractive man... who just happens to be naked. He's having a picnic, with the bottle of Kraft Zesty Dressing casually sitting nearby (see fig. 1). Advertising is aimed at women, from young adults to seniors. Scantily clad women are often used in advertisements to attract the attention of men. Yet we rarely see in advertisements a muscular, half-naked man with a body chiseled by the Greek gods themselves. Kraft embraced the science of sex appeal in its tangy salad dressing commercial. But is this type of advertising effective in attracting its target audience? Using a raunchy image as an advertising tool is nothing new. In 1871, Pearl Tobacco was the first to cast the stone of sex appeal by displaying a sexy topless woman (Beigelman) on its packaging. Since then, many companies have used the theme of sex in their advertisements. Victoria's Secret is known for its sexy advertisements (see fig. 2), which took the company "from three boutiques in San Francisco to the most successful and recognized lingerie brand in the United States, if not the world." (Daye). Companies like Axe, Tag, and Old Spice capitalized on their target audience of young and middle-aged men by marketing their products as “sexual attraction enhancers” (Daye). With a notable revenue gain, many companies are continuing the “sex sells” trend. Sex appeal ads aimed at women are rare compared to those targeting men. The idea of a woman being aroused by looking at an attractive man is often frowned upon and deteriorates into her feminine personality. As women fight for equality, the use of men as sex objects is announced in the middle of the newspaper. A spicy clothing ad offends 'a million mums' and sparks debate.
