    In Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet, we are constantly bombarded with different meanings of words, contrasts and quite irrational characters. They wish things for each other and when they happen, they are surprised. This literary work is filled with situations in which the character intends to achieve one thing, but its results are completely different. Throughout the following paragraphs, the reader must decide whether the examples presented display results opposite to the original plan. At the beginning of the play we are introduced to two characters, Sampson and Gregory. Eager to fight, they believe they have as much responsibility as their masters in defending the Capulet name. “The quarrel is between our masters and us, their men.” They meet some Montagues and decide to taunt them. They just plan to have a little fun and maybe get a chance to play with their swords. Almost like a child anticipating the fun he will have with his new Christmas toys. Instead, they provoke the Capulets enough that the feud turns into a large battlefield, the axis power against the allies. We feel that they are surprised when Benvolio comes to separate them. In doing so, the reader senses the “perplexity” felt in the atmosphere. When Tybalt enters, he dishonors the name of Montague and challenges Benvolio. This in turn triggers another of the many conflicts between the families. The two main men should have understood what was going to happen. After all, these are feuding families, what else would you do? Ultimately, the final verdict on their breach of the peace plays an important role in the play to come.
