  • Essay / Sula by Toni Morrison - The character of Eva Peace in Sula

The character of Eva Peace in SulaIn the novel Sula, there were other important characters besides Sula. The character in this book that I would like to focus on the most is Eva Peace. Eva is a woman who is disabled but still strong, and that will be the subject of this article since this subject was not covered so much in the book. Eva is an amputee. There are many different theories about how she lost her leg. Many say she may have cut off her income in order to receive the insurance money so she could feed her children. Other stories included Eva selling her leg for $10,000.00 or getting it stuck under a train. Some people in town said there was a corn on his toe and it just kept growing, going up his entire leg until doctors finally had to cut it off. Others talked about how his leg just up one day and walked away. No one really knew how Eva lost her leg and few people in the town remembered her with that leg, but everyone knew that Eva Peace was a very strong woman who knew what she had to do to survive . Her survival consisted of taking care of her children and making sure they had enough to eat. Eva was a single mother of three children. She was the matriarchal figure of her household, which included not only her children, Pear, Plum, Hannah, and Hannah's daughter Sula, but also many of the other residents of her household. There were three young boys, all named Dewey by Eva, who had arrived at the house at the same time. Eva knew that if she named them all the same name, it would make them feel equally loved and cared for. Such insults created a positive camaraderie between them. Also residing in the boarding house was a drunkard, Tar Baby, and various newlyweds. Eva kept the whole house under control. Although the logistical theory that she lost her leg was to feed her family, it didn't stop there. Eva did everything she could to protect her children. She used her stump, at one point, to maneuver herself in such a way that she was able to jump out of the window and save Hannah, who was literally on fire..
