    In the article “Modest proposal facing the scourge of youth”, we see George Monbiot expressing his opinion on young people. Monbiot mocks those in society who want to resort to extreme methods to keep young people away from public places - using emotive and figurative language, tone and humor. At the beginning of the article, especially in the first paragraph, you think that Monbiot is taking the subject seriously. But from the end of the second paragraph, we begin to suspect that Monbiot is using humor and taking the subject of the text as a joke. He calls young people “human vermin” and says they are prone to making unpleasant and distressing noises. To solve this “vermin” problem, he mentions a way to keep young people off the streets: by using acoustic deterrence, which was previously used to repel rats, mice and cockroaches. To summarize briefly, Monbiot is comparing youth to vermin and at this point we still don't know if he is serious or not.
