  • Essay / Voter Participation Proposal - 899

The Chartist movement (a working class political movement) in 1840 believed that "people had no one but themselves to blame for the actions of their politicians » (Nash). What Mr Nash and the Chartist movement think could not be more concrete. This country has gotten to the point where people find it difficult to walk down the street to the elementary school where the polling places are and take a few minutes to vote. A vote that millions of people around the world wish they could have themselves. With all the political voting going on in the world and people being forced to love a leader, those absentees should be grateful to live in a democracy. A place where elections aren't rigged and people are truly heard. This is why the question of electoral participation must be raised. It's also very annoying to hear people complaining about our president when they didn't even vote. It is a very bad habit not to vote, and this needs to change with the young citizens of this country. Helping young people understand the importance of voting must start with technological and educational ideas, while extending to ideas for social events. Only then will America's ability to find answers to voter turnout increase. It is very disturbing to know that there was a 6% decrease in the number of young voters (ages 18-29) in the 2012 election compared to 2008 (Circle Youth data). In 2007, the National Conference of State Legislatures released a report and dataset on voter turnout in democratic countries. Here is a quote from that report titled Getting Out the Vote: “It should be noted that in 1972, 18-year-olds were added to the eligible voting population, thereby decreasing the percentages. Nonetheless, voters...... middle of paper... May 13, 1994 finally came out in favor of Chinese aid programs in New York, but that shouldn't even have been an issue the first time. . - All these crazy ideas can work, they just need a little spark of confidence from the government. Regardless, the bottom line is that people should want to vote and contribute to this country. This is a right that American citizens must embrace and all of these ideas are just a way to give us a little kick in the behind to stand up and do it. It's the 21st century and the government needs to get with the times and start reaching out to the youth vote. Elections can be won or lost on this issue, so the bottom line is this: we are so consumed with technology that we just need to incorporate some aspect of voting into it. So who knows, maybe young America isn't so selfish after all.
