Major depressive disorder falls under the subtopic of mood disorders, depressive disorders (Coon 2013). “Psychologists have realized that mood disorders (major emotional disorders) are among the most serious psychological disorders. Each year, approximately 9.5% of the U.S. population suffers from a mood disorder (National Institute of Mental Health, 2011a)” (Coon 2013). I was one of the 9.5 percent. I decided to write about this topic because I want to understand the causes. I have been depressed before without medication or counseling and wanted to know why you are depressed and how it impacts you.
