Patton hoped to lead the Allied invasion of Normandy, but was instead given command of the fictitious force intended to invade Pas de Calais, France, to distract Normandy . invasion (George S. Patton). Once the invasion of Normandy occurred, Patton was given command of the Third Army and led it in the final stages of Operation Cobra (Jones, Taylor). Operation Cobra consisted of a third army attacking simultaneously from the west, south, east towards the Seine and the north (Jones, Taylor). Patton also took a play, from the Germans' own playbook, blitzkrieg tactics, and exploited German weaknesses and rushed across Europe (Jones, Taylor). With Patton moving so quickly across Europe, his army literally ran out of gas, because the supply lines couldn't keep up with him, and the army also ran out of fuel near the Mossele River, outside Metz, France (Jones, Taylor). From October to November, it was a real battle between the Germans and the Third Army, with heavy losses on both sides (Jones, Taylor). Finally, the city of Metz fell into the hands of the Americans on November 23.....
