  • Essay / School and Workplace Violence Prevention - 2004

On December 14, 2012, a young man entered Sandy Hook Elementary School and shot and killed 20 students and six faculty members . “The school's security protocol has recently been enhanced, requiring visitors to be admitted individually after visual screening and identification via video monitor. The school doors were locked at 9:30 a.m. each day, after morning arrivals. The shooter, Adam Lanza, shot his way in, defeating the security system that required visitors to be alerted” (Barron, 2012). Similarly, on November 5, 2009, Major Nidal Hasan, an army psychiatrist, opened fire on a Soldier Readiness Treatment (SRP) center. During his rampage, he shot more than 43 people, fatally wounding 13. This incident occurred on the Fort Hood military installation, which was considered a safe place for soldiers and their families to work and live. The events mentioned above were classified as school and workplace violence. As previously mentioned: “In 2011, 458 workplace homicides occurred, a decrease from 518 in 2010 and 542 in 2009. Since 1993, the number of workplace homicides has decreased by 57%, going from 1,068 to 458” (Statistics, 2012). The question is, which implementations caused this drastic decline? As we have seen in the past, violence in schools and workplaces is largely unpredictable. However, there are a range of prevention measures and precautions that can be implemented to help reduce the likelihood of such an event occurring. We will explore some of the predominant preventions and precautions used by organizations today.
