Essay / Wire EDM Machining - 1396
Wire EDM machining (EDM) is a non-traditional machining process in which a pulsating voltage difference between a wire electrode and a conductive workpiece triggers sparks that erode the material of the part. Removing material in this manner is often advantageous when the workpiece material would be difficult to machine with traditional machine tools due to its high strength, hardness, toughness, etc. (Newton, 2008). Due to the process itself, EDM is capable of producing any complex shape but with loss of surface integrity and other side effects such as kerf width, area affected by the heat, etc. However, the selection of cutting parameters to achieve higher cutting efficiency or precision in WEDM is still not fully solved even with the newest WEDM CNC machine. This is due to the difficult-to-predict nature of the Wire EDM process. As a result, the relationships between cutting parameters and process performance are difficult to model accurately. The problems arise even though the machine itself is very up to date and some people barely research it. Nowadays, the application demands a material that has the best properties in terms of strength, corrosion and other properties. The composition of the material is then made according to the specific properties sought. But the properties also bring disadvantages to which process to choose to make the material, so the composition of the material needs to be studied earlier before making a decision. The ease and economy with which INCONEL alloy 718 can be manufactured, combined with good tensile, fatigue, creep and fracture strength, has resulted in its use in a wide range of applications. The application examples which use Inconel 718 as the main...... middle of paper ......CHAPTER 2Literature review2.1 Introduction2.1.1 Wire electrical discharge machining (EDM) is mainly used to cut a very complex shape which other machines cannot do. One way or another, it is only usable on metal-based products, since electricity is the main source of cutting the product. The process of cutting the metal product is very complicated because many factors need to be considered in order to obtain a perfect finished product. The basic process of EDM is that a spark is generated between two electrodes which are the tool and the workpiece. The spark will occur at the narrowest gap between the two electrodes. The sparks generated are very high and the cycle time of each spark is very short. Due to the high temperature of the spark, the spark area melts in an instant and vaporizes. The residues are then eliminated by the dielectric fluid contained inside the machining zone.
