Huck has unresolved feelings toward stealing, due to the differing opinions of each role model (positive and negative) that influence his life. Although Huck was never arrested or punished by authorities for theft, the early American justice system provided specific punishments for thieves. “Burglary was punished in all the colonies...a capital B [was marked] with the right hand for the first offense...with the left hand for the second...if either [was] committed on the Lord's Day [it was marked] on his forehead like a mark of infamy. (Article 2 page 8). Theft was one of the few actions in early America that had clear retributions under the legal system and had to be obeyed by each colony. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn describes numerous crimes and reprisals that
