World medical history was radically changed by the first doctor to perform a heart transplant: Christiaan Barnard. Devoted to tuberculous meningitis, his interests were manifested through his own doctoral dissertation in 1953 (“Christiaan Barnard Biography”). Barnard raised the bar in the history of medicine by leading ideas and bringing achievements. His candid expertise has made him one of the most important and influential people in the medical world. Born in Beaufort West, South Africa in 1967, Barnard comes from a Dutch family (“Christian Barnard Biography”). When he was five years old, one of his four brothers, Abraham, died of heart disease. After this fatal incident, Barnard was determined to become a surgeon who could help people suffering from heart disease. From his early years he had aspired to do his medical studies at the Medical University of Cape Town in 1945, obtaining his Mb (Bachelor of Medicine) Chb (Bachelor of Surgery). And there, he was offered numerous promotions. In 1948 he was appointed head of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Cape Town in Teaching Hospitals. Over time, Barnard gained fame as an intellectual and brilliant surgeon with notable contributions primarily in the treatment of tetralogy of Fallot and Ebstein's anomaly, heart diseases. Later, in 1951, he served at the Municipal Hospital as a senior resident doctor and also at the Groote Schuur Hospital as a registrar at the Department of Medicine (the famous people). In 1953, Barnard received a Master of Medicine degree from the University of Cape Town and a Doctor of Medicine (MD). This was the first time that antilymphocyte serum and graft atherosclerosis, chronic rejection, was used in a patient. Even after the first heart transplant, Barnard was also able to lead a triumphant second heart transplant. Barnard's deep fascination and personal drive led him to perform groundbreaking surgeries.
