Essay / The history of ballet - 1673
We could describe this rise to glory in one word. Grandiose. Another word to describe them would be inflexible. This is a ballet company that resides in New York and it hasn't been easy for them. Opened in 1933, just after the Great Depression, Lincoln Kristen, George Balanchine and Sergei Diaghilev all created the New York City Ballet. Just like ballet costumes were in their most dramatic period. Ballerina time, the start of the show. The New York City Ballet Costume Shop still exists today and is thriving as it did in the 1930s, when it was just getting started. Created by Barbara Karinska who was George Balanchine's costume designer. Karinska would then pass the burden and work on to other famous ballet designers/costume designers such as Ben Benson and Barbara Matera. The store is a major piece of ballet history for the company. It now resides in the Rose Building at Lincoln Center Plaza. It's in a very small room but don't doubt the very efficient workers who work day and night on beautiful costumes. The boutique is open from October to June to work, mend and detail each costume until the end.
