Essay / Native American Stereotypes in the Media - 1522
Native Americans have lived on American soil for some time now. They were here before the European settlers. They have been here and continue to be present in the United States. However, the way the media represents Native Americans makes it difficult to tell the truth about Native Americans. Only misinterpretations of Native Americans seem to thrive in the media. It seems that the caricature of Native Americans remains the same as that first seen through the eyes of the first settler: savage-like people. Their culture and identity have been marginalized by popular culture. This is particularly evident in mainstream media. There is a lack of Native American presence in mainstream media. There is a lack of Native American characters in different media. When depicted, they are distorted. They are easily one of the most underrepresented cultures and people in American media. Native Americans should not be limited to a stereotype, should be more present in the media, and should not be misrepresented when they are portrayed. The stereotype of Native Americans has been concocted by a long history. Like any stereotype constructed by physical appearance, early European settlers were no different and used this method. Strangers to the New World, they realized that the earth was not uninhabited. The Native Americans were a strange people who didn't dress like them, talk like them, or believe like them. So they wrote down what they observed. They observed a primitive people with an unorthodox religion and way of life. These observations made transatlantic waves. Unknowingly, early settlers had transmitted the first instances of stereotypical Native Americans to the masses. This perpetuated the medium of paper, which meant that the media would cease to lack the presence of Native Americans in their productions. The limited presence of Native Americans results in the limited opportunity for Native Americans to express their views. In order to get a more complete picture of Native Americans, the media must avoid misrepresenting race when present. Portraying Native Americans as a race of savages only makes more people believe this misinterpretation. The media must be better informed about Native American culture, feature more Native Americans in their productions, and provide a clearer image of a people who have suffered from being presented as a primitive people. The media should never be responsible for interpreting the image of a particular race; it should be used to inform people more precisely. A better informed people creates a better society.
