Essay / A Career as a Psychiatrist - 1064
Psychology is the study of the human mind and its functions. I'm interested in psychology because I think it's fascinating to see how people's minds work and how they are affected by different things. It's also quite interesting to try to understand how people think. I already knew that psychologists had their own workspace and that it wasn't a really hectic environment. I'm hoping to know if the job is stressful and requires a lot of work outside of scheduled work hours. I arranged an interview with Dr. Rob Geis. He is a psychiatrist but he was able to answer all my questions about psychology. The only real difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist is that the psychiatrist must attend medical school and can prescribe medications, while a psychologist cannot. I interviewed Dr. Geis on March 19 by telephone. He was very informative with the answers he gave me to my questions. It didn't feel awkward talking to him and I felt like I could ask more questions without feeling bothered. He was very polite and gave me time to write without rushing me at all. According to Dr. Geis, he pursued this career because he genuinely cared about people and wanted to help them solve their problems. A person should not take out their frustration on their patients or judge them because of their problems. Typically, people pursue this career because they want to help people with mental issues. People interested in studying others might also be interested in this career. People who are good problem solvers or who enjoy listening to what's going on in people's lives. To become a psychologist, certain conditions are necessary. College education is required. The degree required depends on the environment of the article...people's behavior is important to evaluate them correctly. It's also a good idea to shadow someone who has been in this career for a while. This gives you a first look, before choosing to pursue a career, to see if it is worth continuing. I learned that there are many different areas of psychology and not all of them deal with people. I didn't know that to become a psychologist you needed so many years of schooling. I still want to be a psychologist because it always seems interesting to find out what's wrong with people and help them get there.
