Jim is an honest and hard-working American computer programmer who recently lost his job to a man who does not provide the correct code or patches for computer programs that he builds. This man lives in a faraway land and provides money that benefits neither Jim nor America. Now Jim has a nice place on the unemployment list. This is not how any good employee should be treated, but today many companies are abandoning their good employees in favor of cheaper foreign employees. Recent outsourcing is a factor in the recent downturn in the U.S. economy. Outsourcing is a complex and multifaceted subject that involves "a company purchasing parts or labor from another company rather than maintaining sufficient numbers of its own employees to do the same work in the country where the company is already based” (“Outsourcing”). The first practice of outsourcing dates back to medieval times, when “nation-states used soldiers for pay to assist their own military forces in ongoing conflicts” (“Outsourcing”). Many view outsourcing as a one-way trade of production facilities being relocated outside the company's location, but in reality it is a two-way trade that also involves companies other regions move their factories to local areas where conditions are beneficial for the specific activity. Outsourcing has evolved but the main idea has remained the same. The recent increase in outsourcing “was driven by Wall Street pressure on businesses. . . . for increased profits. . . in the production of goods and services marketed in the United States" (Roberts). Most companies have chosen to move their factories overseas, to India and China. Douglas Irwin states that "international trade in services in is in its infancy" (Hart).
