  • Essay / Articles by Breda O'Brien and Ed Curran on education...

IntroductionMany statements have been made in an attempt to define leadership. The most commonly accepted is that leadership is the action of providing guidance, direction, authority and management in a societal context or organization. There are many aspects of leadership, including leading a group, having authority over an organization, being in governance or administration, and being dominant, among others. This article will analyze two Irish newspaper articles to explore these aspects and requirements of leadership. The Articles The first article examined was written by Breda O'Brien during the Irish era. This is about the Minister of Education not doing the right thing when it comes to implementing change. In the article, she asks the question of whether leaders should implement change at a time when there are no resources to carry out the proposed change. The Minister of Education, RuairĂ Quinn, in his proposal for reform of the junior cycle, is said to have failed to take into account the readiness of change actors to implement the proposed changes. The proposal aims to move education from an exam-driven system to one using a toolkit to assess and assist in the learning process. Teachers face the problem of abruptly introducing a new approach to the teaching and learning process. These same teachers have suffered pay cuts and many other demoralizing problems. The author states that teachers who implement change feel weakened, demoralized and tired. However, she quickly points out that teachers are not opposed to the plan since they have seen the limits of the current system. The article points out flaws in the management of the plan. The formation is... middle of paper ...... trying to combat such opposition. It is clear that the questions asked about Gerry cannot go away but will increase. Many are eager to see what action Gerry will take, whether he will cling to the leadership and probably tear the party apart or destroy the unity gained over the years, or will he do the noble thing and leave office . This article implies that leadership must be visionary, so that the leader is able to know when he is no longer useful to the organization and pass on leadership to new people who will lead the organization to greater success.
