  • Essay / Maya Angelou: The Power of Dance - 712

Dance has been around for hundreds of years. There are many forms of dance today, but in my opinion they all have one thing in common. All forms of dance touch our souls; the rhythm of the music makes it feel like butterflies are moving through our body. Dance is a form of escape into another world of happiness. Dr. Angelou is a great example of what dance and music can do for our heart, soul and spirit. Dr. Angelou sees life as a rhythm, and we people move to the rhythm of life. It is our choice to move to the rhythm of life and enjoy our daily rhythms. As Dr. Angelou said, “You'll be fine, just go with the flow.” See life like a dance floor. If you fall, you get back up and continue dancing your way into life. Dance has the power to move us humans and the ability to bring satisfaction to our hearts, bodies and minds. Maya Angelou brought peace to the world through her literature, her poets, her films and her presence. Angelou was born April 4, 1928 in St. Louis Missouri. Although born in Missouri, Dr. Angelou grew up in Stamps, Arkansas. Dr. Angelou's birth name was Marguerite Annie Johnson. Maya's parents divorced, and when she was three, she and her brother Bailey were sent to live with their grandmother. Maya lived with her grandmother, Annie Henderson, until she was thirteen (Angelou, 2013). She then left Arkansas to join her mother Vivian Baxter in California (Angelou, 2013). Maya was scared and felt like she wasn't beautiful enough to be Vivian Baxter's daughter. Vivian would call Maya beautiful, something Maya has never been called before. Living with Vivian, Maya learned that she could give simply by making another person smile (Angelou, 2013). In Arkansas, Maya experienced racism...... middle of paper...... Centennial Commission and President Carter invited her to serve on the Presidential Commission for International Women's Year. President Clinton: Asked her to compose a poem to read at his inauguration in 1993. Angelou's reading of her poem "On the Pulse of the Morning" was broadcast live around the world. President Obama: Awarded him the nation's highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011. My favorite quote: “Everything in the universe has a rhythm, everything dances” – Maya Angelou. In my opinion the quote relates to life as rhythm, everything in life moves and after all collaborates to a rhythm, which cannot be seen but felt through the rhythm of everyday life. “You’ll be fine, just go with the flow.” See life like a dance floor. If you fall, you get back up and continue dancing your way into life. » – Maya Angelou.
