Essay / Analysis of Phillis Wheatley - 634
Phillis Wheatley published her first poem at the age of seventeen (358). Phillis Wheatley is believed to live in Senegal and the Gambia, and was sold into slavery when she was around seven years old. The family she was sold to bought her straight off a ship in Boston and were called The Wheatley's, they treated her kindly and educated her in English as well as the Bible (358). The education she was able to receive shaped the poet she aspired to be. In Wheatley's poem "At Cambridge University, in New England." she defends religion not only for the impact it has had on her, but also for the impact religion has had on the entire human race. I believe this poem shows his love for God and his love for religion. In the first six lines, I believe she credits God for leaving Africa and going to America. In the fifth line, “Father of mercy, it is your gracious hand that has sheltered me from these dark adobes” (363) explains that God is the “Father of mercy” who freed her from trials in Africa. She is very passionate about God and she even praises the fact that he is her savior as he is for all humanity. In the tenth line, “Even more, you, sons of knowledge, receive the glad tidings from the messengers of Heaven, how the blood of Jesus flows for your redemption. (363) » In these lines, I sense in her the passion for education and the way she says that without Jesus and without what he did for us humans, we would not have the education that we can have today. He died on the cross for us and with that he gave us freedom and freedom of education. She also uses biblical imagery here to show us what Jesus has done for us. Wheatley, throughout most of this poem, uses biblical imagery, showing us why and how the world is the way it is today. She...... middle of paper...... (363) I feel like she is repeating herself saying that committing a sin can make you feel bad or make you feel like a bad person or even tear yourself apart but you can ask for forgiveness, start over and live an honest life. Phillips Wheatley is such a strong writer and uses such biblical imagery to show us what Jesus has done for us, so all we can do is make our best selves. can be, without sinning. In the poem "At Cambridge University, New England", she argues that religion is true education and that we as humans should believe in God and honor what he has done for us . I personally enjoyed this poem because it shows you a woman at that time being a very educated human being, and she shows it so well, in such dignity and in such honor of someone she loves and truly appreciate for everything he has done for the human race and especially for her.
