The Constitution establishes the government of the United States of America. This is divided into three branches: Congress, which is the legislative branch, the president, also known as the executive, and the Supreme Court, also known as the judiciary. Each branch has its own power and structure. The first branch is legislative (Congress). This branch is bicameral; it consists of the Senate and the House of Representatives. The House of Representatives has 435 seats, 19 committees and 84 subcommittees. They have the power to create laws and impeach presidents. All bills that involve raising money must originate in the House. All laws must pass the House of Representatives before reaching the president. The Senate has 100 seats, two per state, sixteen committees and sixty-nine subcommittees. The vice president is president of the Senate. The Senate has the power to bring impeachments to trial with a two-thirds vote. The Senate must also approve all bills to raise funds, and all laws must pass before being presented to the President. Together, they supervise elections, tax, borrow money, mint currency, set the rules for naturalization, regulate commerce, declare war, and pass appropriate and necessary laws. Although the legislature has many powers over the United States, it does not have the power to suspend Habeas Corpus, it cannot tax interstate commerce, it cannot withdraw money from the Treasury to unless a law is passed to this effect, and he cannot give a title of nobility. The executive power is the second power. The president is the boss. He must be a natural-born citizen, with at least fourteen years of life in the United States, must be at least 35 years old, and must give the state of the union to congress...... middle of paper... ...retains prolonged use of energy. As the saying goes, “Knowledge is power.” In 1979, the president was absolutely right when he presented this idea to Congress and the Department of Education was created. For our government to survive as a democracy, it was understood that citizens must be educated and well informed to understand the politics of our society and those around us. This is why I can apply and attend colleges and achieve higher goals in my education.
