  • Essay / Compare and Contrast The Wizard of Oz Essay - 995

Miss Gulch is a grumpy old lady who bikes to Dorothy's house to see Dorothy, Uncle Henry, and Aunt Em, only to complain that Toto is biting her . She threatens Dorothy's aunt and uncle that if they don't hand over the dog, she will take legal action to take away the entire farm. She also received an order from the sheriff to take Toto with her and Dorothy responded furiously and called Miss Gulch a "wicked old hag". In the film, the viewer can hint that Miss Gulch may be a real witch. However, when Dorothy was swept away by the cyclone in the film, an evil witch flew through her window who looks just like Miss Gulch, except for the black dress and green skin. After the cyclone stopped, Dorothy landed in the Land of Oz where everyone she meets later on her journey home resembles the people she knew before the cyclone. Compare with the original Wonderland of Oz story, Miss Gulch does not exist in the book nor does she transform into the Wicked Witch of the West in the Wizarding Land of Oz. Another important fact is that the Wicked Witch of the West in the film is depicted as a green-skinned, hunched lady who wears a black dress and a pointed black hat, in comparison to an old witch who wears a mixed outfit with an eyepiece on one of them.
