Essay / PECKHAMS - 1316
Hakluyt argues in his speech that the British could work with the Indians to create a prosperous empire in the New World. It was certainly possible for each group to help each other: the first contacts between Indians and Europeans demonstrated a curiosity and an interest opposed to aggression. This can be seen in Indian Chief Powhatan's speech to Captain John Smith: Powhatan wanted to "assure [Smith] of our loves, and every year our friendly trade will furnish you with Horn." Powhatan and the Indians also knew that the English settlers needed their help. There were goods that the settlers could “obtain only by our (the Indians’) labors.” However, this kindness was not always reciprocated: Smith, reader of Machiavelli's Art of War and governor of the colony, claimed that violence was the only thing the natives would respond to. However, English colonies never reached the extent of the Spanish conquistadors and men like De Soto and Coronado. But the English did not really have the capacity: the British government or army did not directly support colonization until the 18th century. The English colonists did not have the military might to crush the powerful Indian confederations. At first, many tribes viewed the English as potential allies: using firearms and military assistance, the Indians used their English allies to defeat their rivals. During the Pequot War, the English, Narragansetts, and Mohegans joined forces to defeat the Pequots. This initially proved a boon for all; the English had defeated an enemy, and the Mohegans and Narragansetts now found themselves the major native powers in the region. Comparing English methods to Spanish ones is a bit of a stretch: indigenous groups, every European...... middle of paper ...... are the dominant force in Europe and North America. This was thanks to a modified, and sometimes spontaneous, version of Hakluyt's plan. . The Catholic threat was driven from the colonies once France was defeated by the British in key wars in Europe and America. Native Americans proved to be useful allies and destructive enemies; With their loyalties forever changing, Hakluyt's idea of a unified front never came to fruition. The spread of Protestantism accelerated with the colonization of the New World, but not because of Native American converts. The population growth of the English colonies not only produced many new believers, but also workers who helped build the empire. In 1763, England was the leading North American power, thinking that this situation would be changed by a revolution a few years later, but for the moment, men like Hakluyt and Johnson could rest easy..
