Modern technology has evolved and had a negative impact on our society. There are multiple reasons why this affects our community, such as lower grades, job stability, cyberbullying, sexting, and it can hurt college admission. I knew a family friend who had a horrible experience with social media, which disrupted his dreams and life goals. Social media has a negative influence on our lives, causing many problems in our community. Social networks are websites that help people interact with each other and provide information such as images and videos. Social media started in 1971 when the very first email was sent. But it was the 1970s that paved the way for social communication. Their website at the time was called Bulletin Board System “BBS”, it was like the Facebook of our time. Just like in the 70s, the 80s developed social networking sites but it was the GEnie site that brought people together which allowed people to chat and play video games but they were not as graphic as Today. When the 90s came around, more and more social networks grew, dominating this generation, websites such as Craigslist, AOL, Geocities, but it was ICQ that took center stage in the late 90s. 90s. Then there is the generation we live in today which has invented a multitude of means of communication. Some of these sites were extremely well known at the time, there is the one and only myspace, youtube, and then the best known and most used today in our society; Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
