  • Essay / The Ukrainian Revolution In Ukraine - 1099

Ukraine is a country in Eastern Europe bordering Russia to the north and northeast. Lately, Ukraine has been making international headlines; the country is in complete and utter turmoil or, for lack of better words, crisis. What began as a demand from Ukrainian citizens for a change of government, limiting the powers of the president, restoring the country's constitution to its original 2004-2010 form and closer ties with the EU. The peaceful protests turned into a nightmare when then-Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych broke his word. Instead, he made a deal with the Russian president and then sought refuge in Russia. A few weeks later, he was ousted, sparking the Ukrainian revolution and the annexation of Crimea, also known as the Crimean Crisis. Even today, there is still difficulty in reaching any sort of civil agreement to end this feud. This is why the EU, the United States and their allies imposed sanctions. The European Commission is currently working on more ambitious economic measures that will be imposed if Russia takes further steps to weaken Ukraine. If an agreement cannot be reached quickly, the fate of Ukraine and its people looks very bleak..
