  • Essay / Discrimination and discrimination - 1475

Discrimination is the denial of services and fair treatment to a single person, a group of people and/or a nation based on their nationality, gender, sex , age, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, etc. Prejudice is a feeling or opinion about a person or group before receiving knowledge about that person or group. When I think of discrimination, the first things that come to mind are slavery and the Holocaust. Slavery is present all over the world, but in the United States, slavery is what we think of first when we hear the word slavery. African Americans were brought to the United States to work for free for white Americans and were malnourished, whipped, separated from their families, and sometimes killed. The lives of slaves varied depending on their duties, their master, and their location. Slaves working in the fields worked from sun up to sun down 6 days a week and were sometimes given food that was not even fit for animal consumption. The slaves lived in small cabins with dirt floors and had very little furniture, if they even had any. The horrible stories told about slavery were often true. Slave owners were paid to get as much work as possible out of their slaves, regardless of how they had to do it. If a slave was found guilty of arson, raping a white woman, or considered a rebel, he was immediately sentenced to death. (27b. Slave Life and Slave Codes, ushistory.org, 2014). The first African slaves arrived in Virginia in 1619. By 1808, the international slave trade was outlawed but it still continued within the United States (History of Slavery in America, infoplease.com, 2013). In my opinion, slavery in the United States is the most discriminatory thing that happened here in America. There has been a lot of discrimination... middle of paper ... this bill took everything as if the bill passed, discrimination would be legal and under the Constitution, discrimination is prohibited. It's not just gays or lesbians who are unhappy with this bill, even most people whose sexual orientation is heterosexual do not agree with this bill. Just because someone is gay or lesbian does not mean they should be refused service in public places. While in reality this is a PUBLIC place, the service should be provided to anyone who can afford to pay. The service cannot always be provided to the homeless, because then everyone would think they don't have to pay. Under the Constitution, every American citizen has civil rights, and this bill would deprive many people of those rights. This denial of rights infuriates the gay and lesbian community because being gay or lesbian is not necessarily something you can control..
