Essay / Parallels between the prose of Bob Marley and Friedrich...
In 1645, British imperialists established colonial rule over Jamaica and exploited African slaves to capitalize on the islands' rich resources. An estimated 700,000 African descendants were enslaved and shipped to Jamaica over the next two centuries. Additionally, the civilizations of indigenous peoples were destroyed, pre-Columbian economies were eliminated, and New World ideologies, particularly racial stratification, were established. The transatlantic slave trade was halted by Britain in 1807, but slavery continued to flourish in Jamaica until August 1, 1834, when Parliament sanctioned an indenture system that required all slaves to be no longer of six years to carry out an involuntary apprenticeship of four to six years. before obtaining their freedom. This system was comparatively as denigrating to black people as slavery because the oppressors sought to use this time frame to further weaken and/or diminish the morale of black people before they gained their freedom. Anger over colonization and slavery completely weakened Jamaica's black community and hindered its ability to establish sovereignty until 1958. In 1962, Jamaica finally gained independence from Great Britain. Yet to this day, Jamaica's economic, social and political infrastructure remains dilapidated and the nation struggles to establish itself above the level of a third world country. Legendary reggae artist, Robert Nesta Marley, has played an influential role in agitating for change on behalf of Africa's disenfranchised descendants by using his music as a voice and outlet to raise awareness of social and financial issues which afflict his people. His core group, Bob Marley and the Wailers, was founded in the midst of undescribable history......has fostered the establishment of an atmosphere throughout society that is completely free from forces that oppress or hinder a freedom of the individual to execute his will to power. In a world devoid of imposed ideologies (e.g. racism or Christianity), both men agree that humanity is designed to establish and achieve the goals necessary to evolve toward an ultimate level of being, happiness. Centuries and centuries of established laws, religions and stratifications have fostered a society in which man is overly dependent on being told what is right and what to do. Nietzsche and Marley call for abandoning complacency and urge people to follow what they think is right and what they believe they should do. The freedom to exercise free will is the greatest triumphant, and so sings the prose of Friedrich Nietzsche and Robert Nesta Marley..
