Essay / Will a post-racial America ever exist? - 703
Every day, race is discussed and criticized in news articles, magazines, on television, and in various other media. Even though we seem to have moved beyond segregation, race remains a polarizing issue. Many people today still claim that certain races are lower class or to be feared, while humans are merely products of their own environment. If all minorities were given the same opportunities, these misconceptions and stereotypes would disappear. A post-racial America is not possible because the past of racism will continue to persist through generations, people are born with judgments, and there will always be that one person whose ignorance trumps everything else. Many people argue that our past racial history is over. and that America is beginning to realize the concept of a post-racial America. For example, there are no longer many major cases of African Americans being treated as lower class as opposed to other skin tones. “The election of Obama proved, like nothing else, that racism no longer exists” (McWhorter). Barack Obama, our current president, is the first African-American to be elected. However, people are still judgmental and bigoted towards other races and treat them with very little respect. We often hear Hispanics or Latin Americans colloquially referred to as Mexicans. We also see people being arrested and taken aside at airports to participate in so-called random searches simply because they are Muslim. Even African Americans who we have tried to treat as equals for so long are still treated unfairly. "Only 14% of drug users are black, but blacks make up 37% of those arrested for drug crimes...are... middle of paper ... each from a post-humanitarian world.
