Thousands of people are affected by the lack of safety in schools across the country. Students everywhere are attending schools that are more dangerous than expected. This is a growing concern around the world, and schools need to improve or risk becoming unsafe. Whether it's building safety, drills, concussions, social or technology safety, schools must improve to reduce the risk of incidents. Project Citizen is an effort to improve our community one step at a time. The Citizen Project requires a lot of research for specific sections of our core problem. These are called tasks. Once all tasks are completed, everyone writes a document summarizing the main problem. Then, everyone makes a presentation as a group. The keys to success in Project Citizen are working hard, researching well, working as a team, and most importantly, being organized. The steps in the Citizen Project are: identify a problem in the school or community, research the problem, evaluate possible solutions, then develop public policy ideas and choose the best solution. The main goal of the Citizen Project is to improve our school/community to make it a better place. This year the hope is to make our school safer and less accident prone. In order to have a safe school, you need to know the terms to understand their importance. Safety means the condition of being protected from or unlikely to cause danger, risk or injury. Security is the state in which one is free from any danger or threat. These two terms are synonymous with well-being, protection and absence of danger. “Safety First” means “Safety Always”. said Charles M. Hayes. This shows how security must be present at all times, as you never know when an incident may occur. If an intruder enters, find your teacher, follow their instructions, stay quiet and act quickly, lock all doors and windows, turn off the lights, hide in a closet, cabinet, etc., DO NOT make noise or go out until told to. Many intruders entering the school have had tragic consequences for the school and the community. Some of these events include the Columbine school shooting, when a bomb was planted in the school cafeteria and shocked the community. Then there was the shooting at Pine Middle School, where a student shot and injured two other students. These shootings are very scary and we need to make sure this never happens to us. All teachers and staff know the drill procedures, but we need to make them known to everyone in the school. Overall, the exercises are very important to know and be able to perform.
