Essay / The Dangers of Begging - 743
It is disheartening to see a human being sitting in a corner with a sign claiming to be homeless, hungry and desperate. When you see a generous citizen handing over a few dollars to the needy, hoping that they will fulfill their wish to eat for the day, you feel a sense of kindness and joy. However, I have witnessed this many times, from this same desperate local woman, dressed in tattered clothes and disheveled hair. I was thinking about doing a so-called good deed until I saw her one night getting into a fairly new Jeep Liberty in a nearby parking lot. This baffled me and made me wonder who was desperate and dishonest. Panhandling is a growing problem and what I believe has become a trend in the United States today. Begging and the negative effects it has on society, including the beggars themselves, are difficult to escape. So, if I could ban anything in the world, I would ban begging. Lately, begging has become a nuisance. It's rare to stop at a busy intersection without seeing one, or even several, people on every corner with a sign in hand. This is degrading to the visual appeal with which they beg. Seeing large numbers of beggars or even unkempt homeless citizens can make people feel uncomfortable in this area. Additionally, beggars leave a lot of pollution on the streets. Areas where panhandling is popular are usually littered with an excessive amount of trash such as: bottles, wrappers and cigarette butts (which are not biodegradable). Begging has become such a problem that I have avoided certain areas that interest me greatly. For example, my friend and I had just gotten off the Max train and started walking towards the Saturday market. It wasn't even a minute before... ... middle of paper ...... with less demanding jobs but with a source of income. Jobs may involve something for the community like maintaining parks or picking up trash. Either way, they will be one step closer to integrating into the functional society in which we live. Banning begging has many positive effects. As noted in the sections above, society will be more comfortable going to places it once avoided. Areas where there was once panhandling will be more welcoming to travelers and those currently residing there. The beggar will learn what it means to gain what he desires, just like the majority of the human race. They will learn to take responsibility and choose their priorities according to their need for survival. The dishonest can rejoin the rest of society and those who need help can receive appropriate assistance to function and thrive..
