  • Essay / Kafka's Metamorphosis - 1497

Many views of existentialism are expounded in Kafka's Metamorphosis. One of these main visions is the alienation or estrangement that manifests itself in Gregor's relationship with his family, his social life, and the way he experiences his life after the metamorphosis. This suggests in particular that man is reduced to an insect by the modern world and his family; human nature is completely self-centered. Kafka reflects the belief that the more generous and selfless a person is, the worse they are treated. This view is in direct conflict with the way things should be; the man, especially Gregor, must be treated in accordance with his actions. Gregor should be greatly loved by his family, regardless of his condition. This idea is displayed in three distinct themes. First, Gregor's family is only concerned with the effect that Gregor's change will have on them, particularly the effect it will have on their finances and reputation. They are more than willing to take advantage of Gregor for free; he works to pay their debt and they are happy to afford luxuries. Gregor is his soul-occupied family member and is their main focus when Gregor transforms. Second, Gregor is penalized for his efforts to be a good son and a good worker; his work is completely taken for granted by his family. The Samsa family is not interested in Gregor beyond his own needs, strangers are treated with reverence. Third, this is manifested in the positive changes that occur in the Samsa family as Gregor descends into tragedy and insignificance. As Gregor's life becomes more painful, isolated, and worthless, the Samsa family becomes more functional and self-sufficient. In The Metamorphosis, Gregor Samsa almost seems to be a human form of currency...... middle of paper..... .orm of a bug, a form that only knows how to work. By ignoring the purpose of being an insect, Gregor defeats the purpose of living in his new life form and, in fact, dies. The Metamorphosis advances the existential vision according to which choice is the opportunity of the individual. It is the responsibility of the individual to maintain a balance between work and leisure. The Metamorphosis suggests that if someone chooses to devote their entire life to work, they are just buzzing insects, but if they devote their life to leisure, they are no better off; you have to find a balance. As rational beings, the burden of moderation between value for society and value for self must be borne by the individual. You have to be productive to have value for society, and you have to have time to have value in its eyes..
