Overall Analysis for the Vancouver OlympicsThis section of my research provides a brief summary of the Vancouver Olympics as an event in terms of sustainability. Climate-related goals for the Vancouver Olympics included LEED-certified and energy-efficient venues. ; the use of renewable and green energies for its electrical needs; and relying on public transportation during the Games – all of which were achieved (Vancouver 2010 2009). VANOC also successfully diverted 85% of waste generated during the Games to landfills through various waste reduction, recycling and reuse strategies. another important aspect of the Games. According to a sustainability report from the David Suzuki Foundation, VANOC has provided information on its climate-related initiatives through its annual sustainability reports, website and effective communications with stakeholders. VANOC has been very open about some of the challenges it faced, including its limited budget for sustainability initiatives, and sought advice and ideas from outside the organization. VANOC has released three sustainability reports to date, with two more planned, which is more than any previous Olympic organizing committee. The David Suzuki Foundation awarded the Vancouver Olympic Games a bronze medal for its efforts in sustainable development and the environment (David Suzuki Foundation 2010). An inventory of GHG emissions was also carried out by VANOC. It was estimated that the Vancouver Olympics would generate approximately 268,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, with 118,000 tonnes coming primarily from its own operations, 22,000 tonnes coming from sponsors and partners and 128,000 tonnes coming from spectators and others. VANOC is also the first Olympic organizing committee to track and report on Ga...... middle of paper ......ainability. One of the initiatives that was clearly missing was the application document and the analysis of the games by the David Suzuki Foundation. was promoting healthy, locally grown foods for the games. The Sustainability Scorecard makes no mention of health and diet, which are crucial issues for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Although there have been various innovative urban farming initiatives in the Games Village, overall little has been done in areas related to health and food. The unforeseen warm winter was one of the main factors that significantly increased the carbon footprint of the Games. As already discussed in Chapter 2 of this report, the event organizers were not well prepared for an unexpectedly warm winter which may be attributed to climate change. The interests of First Nations people were ignored by the organizers of the Games..
