Essay / Use of Color in The Great Gatsby - 584
Fitzgerald's use of symbolism and color in The Great Gatsby is prominent in each chapter of his novel. To fully understand the meaning of one's use of colors, a reader must recognize the situations in which those colors are used. Throughout the novel, Fitzgerald uses the color green. Green has many possible interpretations, and its use to reveal insight into Gatsby's character is probably the most significant. One of the possible meanings of the color green is envy. Gatsby can be seen as an envious and jealous character. He once had the love of his life, Daisy, but she is now married to another man. He devotes all his time and effort to getting back with Daisy. He also envies many rich people around him. He throws these big parties and extravagant meetings so he can interact with the rich. This leads one to believe that Gatsby is indeed "green with envy"....... middle of paper ...... and how hope in the future becomes very bleak. People strive to find a better world under the green light. Gatsby had a dream and he came unbearably close to that dream. Yet despite his best efforts, he failed to capture the better day he wanted. He hoped for “the green breast of the new world”. People's idea that tomorrow will bring a better day seems justified, but it is far from being realized..
