Essay / Dr. Malik's Research Method - 1193
Even though Dr. Roy Basch left BMS to study psychiatry at Mount Misery, he faced a similar conflict: he was taught conflicting research methods. With each new rotation, Roy was exposed to a different type of psychiatric research, exposing him to a plethora of different ideas and theories. One of the most effective methods Roy learned was introduced to him during his time under the care and teaching of Dr. Malik. Dr. Malik's methods were effective because he was humble and connected with his patients as human beings, allowing them to recover because their terrifying illness was "just another characteristic of being human" (page 158). Malik showed his humility in several ways. First of all, he wasn't afraid to admit his limitations. He did not try to cure all the patients on his ward, but rather recognized that "most patients would be better off outside of Misery and we would release as many as possible...". He would fight for those who needed to stay” (page 32). Mr. K is an example of the "harm caused by psychologists trying to cure people" (page 36) because many psychologists have failed to recognize the difference between something that is "organic, medically treatable, opposition to mental treatment,” adding, “You don’t treat brain tumors with psychotherapy. (page 36). He also “had a healthy respect for the crazy and inaccessible nature of some people” (page 158) and for these people he suggested: “if you can't help them, at least don't hurt them” (page 158). . He realized that in some cases his own abilities and the wonders of modern medicine were not enough. Furthermore, Malik did not rely on his own knowledge to help his patients recover. He had the humility to admit: “The problem is not knowing it, it does not arise.” This is why Malik ...... middle of paper ......s to “start moving toward vitality” (page 158). This is why psychiatry has the power to heal people. As Malik pointed out to Roy: "With a healthy young woman like this who wants to kill herself, if you can connect with her now, at this shitty time in her life, she probably won't try again never commit suicide! If this isn't a cure, what is? (page 68). Although most people think of “cures” as coming only from labs and test tubes, in psychiatry, a cure can require something as simple as a conversation or even a simple question. Ultimately, Malik's research method is effective because he approached it with humility and carried it out to connect with his patients. Just as the brain relies on connections between neurons to carry out its functions, the connection between doctor and patient is an essential part of psychotherapy..
