  • Essay / Anne Hutchinson and Robert Williams: fighters for...

Freedom to dissentRoger Williams and Anne Hutchinson were one and the same: a ruthless dissident who opposed the majority. They both believed in freedom of conscience, were persecuted by theocrats, and both helped dissidents rebuild their lives in the colonies. First of all, in their time, it was recognized that one had no right to choose one's religion against the government. It seemed that whatever one wanted to believe was not an option when it came to following a belief, it was more than likely that his government had made that choice for his people. Roger Williams, having been educated by Sir Coke on religious ideals, seemed embarrassed by this fact and was determined to change this as a former master who had spent time in a London prison for his own ideas (Humanities, 1983) . Anne Hutchinson, daughter of a dissident Puritan minister (Reuben, 2011), had different ideas from the main religious institutions in her country and was particularly unhappy at not being able to accept beliefs different from the main ones. Williams' work addresses this subject beautifully as he logically explains, even through quotations in Scripture, why if one wishes to be a true follower of Christ, religious tolerance is essential. In The Bloudy Tenet of Persecution, Williams explains that Christ "abhors" the practice of forced worship and the persecution of different faiths, even of those who are not Christians. Anne Hutchinson openly practiced freedom of conscience as part of her life. She at one time had meetings in England where she spoke about the doctrines and treatises written by John Cotton, and she always added her own interpretations (Anne Hutchinson...... middle of paper...... rry, JM (2012, January).
