Bilingual Language Acquisition in Early ChildhoodAbstractThe purpose of this article is to determine how infants and young children are able to acquire more than one language at the same time before reaching the age of three. . To be bilingual, does the child's mother have to be bilingual or can this be taught by a tutor not associated with the family? This article will begin with how languages are organized in the brains of infants and what influences the brain. Bilingual Language Acquisition in Early Childhood Introduction How one acquires the competence to be bilingual has been a topic of particular interest to me during early childhood. From my school age to my adulthood, I am amazed at how capable the young brain is of acquiring language. My first exposure to another language was in middle school and that language was Spanish. I remember asking the question, “Where did you learn to talk like that?” He couldn't explain it to me only to say that it was learned at home from his Latino mother and African-American father. Those who were Filipino said it took them years to study and practice the English language here in the United States because they came to this country speaking their own language. Some people I know who come from bilingual homes can understand the other language but don't speak it even though they were raised in a bilingual home. I expected that learning another language would be an automatic process, but I now realize that is not the case. There is nothing that can or cannot be learned, including language acquisition. There appears to be little research in the area of bilingualism in infants. Researchers agree that how language is acquired is not a pr...... middle of paper ...... but rather an auditory issue? Is it more visual? Is it speech? The auditory process must play an important role in the field of linguistics, in the formation of the order of words and sounds. Several factors appear to play a role in bilingualism during childhood. Apparently, being raised in a bilingual home environment and being able to hear and see are equally important and would carry the same weight, just as one part affects the other.
