  • Essay / Holden Renault: Story of "Jerry Renault" - 1725

Jerry RenaultFourteen-year-old Jerry Renault looks like your typical skinny or thin teenager in his first year at Trinity, an all-boys Catholic high school. He tends to dwell on depressive emotions, hormonal sexual frustration, and his mother's loneliness, while questioning his own existence in the world. He has no mother and died recently, a few months later. He often remembers the times when his parents lived together in a house with a large garden and a lawn that his father never tired of mowing. He tries to become a quarterback and succeed in school despite this weighing him down. In addition to being a good son to his widowed father, Jerry begins to panic because of his father's boring lifestyle. He fears that he will end up like his father and find himself stuck in the same routine as his father. Realizing this factor, Jerry decides to change his life on impulse by saying "No" to chocolates, but he is actually saying "no" to the entire "universe" that The Vigils and Brother Leon have created at Trinity. The random guy on the street accuses Jerry of being a "square boy." Average age fourteen years…”. Disregarding the guy's aimless lifestyle, he begins to question every routine in his life. It's not like he doesn't love and appreciate his father, but Jerry is increasingly worried about growing up and being trapped in the kind of boring life his father had. He realizes that his father is stuck in a boring and almost unhappy life as he looks in the mirror and "sees his father's face reflected in his own features." We can also see this in the story , Jerry tends to oscillate between excitement and boredom by isolating himself and not being isolated.
