Essay / An Analysis of Reasonable Doubt by Alice Camille
“Christianity Is Not Spiritual” The article Christianity Is Not Spiritual by John Garvey focuses on the distance between Christians' belief in the resurrection of the dead and the way they live their lives. He also discusses the Nicene Creed and addresses the idea of hypocrisy. The article begins with the statement “There is a distance between what people think they believe and what they actually believe” (Garvey 8). Garvey assures that the entire article is not about hypocrisy, which is an easy concept to understand, but rather about how people believe what they do and still live poorly. However, upholding every word of the Creed would be a great struggle and it is not an easy concept to understand. Garvey goes on to say that the way most Christians describe life after death does not resemble what is said in the Creed, nor does it seem to have any biblical basis. The soul departs when the body dies. Pagan beliefs state that the soul becomes a lower version after death, while Neoplatonic beliefs conclude that the soul transitions to a higher version.
