In today's society, to be considered cool, one must learn to become modern and contemporary. Day by day, older people are looking for the quality of being young again. A disastrous way to do this is through technology, which leads to arguments and frustration. In the 1800s, the use of modernization played an important role in possessing power. The first country to embark on the race for modernization was Great Britain. This period is called the industrial revolution. Not only did the Industrial Revolution bring vital advancements to Britain, it also brought deadly diseases. Therefore, the Industrial Revolution had both positive and negative effects on Britain and its people. Before the 1800s, approximately 90% of civilians lived in rural areas and were farmers. To earn a living, civilians traded raw materials and food with neighboring populations or local towns (Bellis). To improve the efficiency of agriculture, new tools were invented and manufactured. This started a chain reaction of inventions. Farmers demanded new and improved methods to increase work efficiency even further. This caused civilians to think more about quantity than quality. This idea gave rise to the construction of factories. Before the industrial revolution, transportation played a huge role in daily life. The only way to make money was to trade goods, but the only means of transportation was by wagon and horse. It took time to transport it from one place to another. Improving technology brought railways and canals. This made transportation cheaper and 100 times more efficient. This not only made more money, but also created jobs during the construction of the railways. The canals were overcrowded, so the government passed laws to improve them (“Industrial Revolution” 1). The main cause of these diseases was the method of waste disposal. Due to the lack of circulation, the waste could not be easily destroyed. One solution to this problem was retention pools. Latrines used by civilians sometimes remained unused for more than two years. The longer the cesspits were used and left uncleaned, the more disease-spreading bacteria accumulated there. When there were no sewage pits available, people had to do it in the street or sometimes do it in buckets and throw it in the street. Additionally, there were no laws or an organized waste collection system to prevent sanitation, so city life eventually became a dirty life. In conclusion, the Industrial Revolution had both beneficial and negative effects on Britain..
