The film The Invention of Lying takes place in a world where men do not have the ability to lie. In this hypothetical world, people live in joyful truth by saying everything honestly, including what they think, at all times. This raises the question of whether lying is morally permissible or not. Possessing the ability to lie could possibly be for the greater good of the individual in certain circumstances. The ideals of utilitarianism can arise from this, as can virtue ethics. I will say that lying is morally permissible. Viewing lying as morally permissible shows us that any action taken by an individual should be seen as an attempt to achieve their utility and happiness by deciding for themselves what is best for them. I will argue that the theory of utilitarianism supports the reasoning that lying should be considered permissible. A utilitarian perspective states that the morality of an action must be judged whether it is right and useful for the benefit of a majority. This considers that the most desirable consequence of any action is the greatest utility for the greatest number.....
