People suffering from anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa or binge eating disorder should seek help due to major health risks, such as: malnutrition, muscle atrophy, paralysis, cancer, heart attack and death. When someone has an eating disorder, they usually have underlying mental health issues. Only one in ten people with eating disorders receive treatment (Eating Disorder Statistics). These eating disorders are the most common eating disorders, affecting 1 in seven women (Understanding Eating Disorders in Adolescents). If a person suffers from an eating disorder, they have a strong fear of gaining weight. They have a distorted image of their body (Eating Disorders). They may think they are fat or ugly, or they may use eating to comfort themselves. People with anorexia deprive themselves of food and nutrients because of what they see in the mirror. Some anorexics spend several hours a day exercising to burn off the calories they consumed throughout the day. In most cases, anorexics eat less than they should and count every calorie. Bulimia nervosa is a similar eating disorder, although some actions are different. People with bulimia eat large quantities of food and then do whatever it takes to rid their body of all the food they just ate (bulimia nervosa). They will use laxatives, vomit, or exercise excessively. The medical term for people who eat large amounts of food and then vomit is called bulimia and purging (bulimia nervosa). Binge eating disorder is usually confused with bulimia, but they are very different. A person with binge eating disorder will eat large quantities of food, but will not try to rid their body of food.
