Major (Lear, Cordelia, Edmund, Goneril and Regan) • King Lear – The king of Britain who is used to lavishing all his power and having people on his side. He doesn't like being one. Conceded: He likes other people to take care of all his needs and having the title of king, but leaves the work to others. Tormented: As his health deteriorates mental health deteriorates, he is tormented internally and later discovers that people he thought he could trust want to kill him. • Cordelia – She is King Lear's youngest daughter, whom he disowns because she is not able to put into words her love for her father. The king of France marries her without a dowry, but for her virtue. Misunderstood: Her father misunderstands her inability to put into words her love for him and he disowns her. Devoted: Even if her father disowns her, she continue to care. about him and even brings his army to save him from his torturers. • Edmund- He is the youngest son of Gloucester. He is a troublesome character, whose plans to cause distress in the lives of other characters continually succeed. Instigator: He constantly causes trouble among the other characters and is always looking for someone. Abandoned: Gloucester disowns him, leaving him without a father.• Goneril- She is the eldest daughter of King Lear and also the wife of the Duke of Albany. She challenges Lear's power, takes military power away from her husband, and brazenly begins an affair with Edmund. Greedy: She exaggerates too much by telling her father how much she loves him just so that she...... middle paper. .....with their previously disowned and abandoned child. An example of symbolism in the play is the storm as it symbolizes the inner chaos and increasing madness of King Lear. An example of conflict can be found in Act 3, Scene 7, where Cornwall evaluates Gloucester's eyes. A theme found in the play is the reconciliation between King Lear and his daughter Cordelia to the extent that she remained devoted to her father even after his banishment and she even brings him an army to save him from his tormentors. An example of mood in the play takes place during the storm creating a frightening and intense mood as the winds roar and the clouds roll across the sky. A tone of "conceded" can be found in Act 1, Scene 1, of King Lear as he asks his daughters to flatter him by telling him how much they love him. The title of the work is the name of the main character of the play.
