Violence is a major problem in educational institutions. School violence continues to increase at an alarming rate. “Each year, 3 million young people in the United States are victims of crime at school. Nearly 2 million of these incidents involve violence” (“The Challenge of School Violence”). What pushes an individual to act violently in a school environment? There are many lethal and non-lethal practices of violence in schools. In my opinion, there is no justification for individuals to go to particular extremes, such as school shootings. Stuart Henry says: “Our nation’s schools should be safe havens for teaching and learning, free from crime and violence. Any case of crime or violence at school not only affects the individuals involved, but can also disrupt the educational process and affect bystanders, the school itself and the surrounding community (“What is violence school? After looking further into why one might feel the desire to act in such vulgar ways, I concluded that violence often results from harassment, explicit media, and environmental impact. First, bullying is most directly associated with school violence. Various incidents were investigated by the U.S. Secret Service and the Department of Education, later renamed the Safe Schools Initiative. Through in-depth interviews, the Department's Safe School Initiative found that "approximately 71 percent of perpetrators had experienced threats, physical violence, persecution, and bullying from other students before carrying out their violent attacks" ( “Bullying”). Experiences of severe bullying can lead to feeling resentful toward the bully.
