Cholera is an infection of the small intestine caused by the bacteria Vibrio Cholerae which releases toxins that cause cells to release water in the small intestine, creating the Urgency to have a bowel movement (diarrhea). to extreme dehydration. If left untreated, cholera can quickly lead to death (WHO). Symptoms can range from mild to severe and often include, but are not limited to: abdominal cramps, dry mouth, dry skin, glassy or sunken eyes, dehydrated tear ducts, drowsiness, low urine output, nausea, rapid dehydration, rapid heart rate, sunken “soft spots” (fontanelles) in infants, unusual sleepiness or fatigue, excessive thirst, vomiting, rapid loss of minerals in the blood creating a electrolyte imbalance (which can cause shock), dangerous fluid loss, and watery diarrhea that starts suddenly and smells “fishy” (PubMed Health 2012).
